Kiera Jones is a documentary-inspired photographer exploring themes of change and memory. Through murky reflections, Jones investigates a site referred to colloquially as the witches’ tunnel. While the stories surrounding this location span decades, Jones’ visits to the brook attempt to still the passage of time, freezing the earth, sky, and the water that cycles between.
The series explores the boundary between the natural landscape and an imagined landscape. While elements of the landscape anchor the images to reality, the structures within become abstracted. The familiar forms become fluid, offering a distorted clarity that echoes the transient temperament of natural forms. Jones juxtaposes the permanence of landscape with the volatility of memory, revisiting childhood sentiments through a matured gaze. The photographer invites the viewer to adopt this childlike curiosity, looking beyond the surface of the water to appreciate the place in-between. The body of water has become integral to the photographer’s practice, acting as a bridge between the earth and the sky and a portal for the artist to reconnect with her childhood fantasies.
The exhibited images are fixed beneath frosted glass, which serves as a thin veil between the viewer and the imagined landscape, visible only to those who look beyond the surface.
